At The Digital Canopy we want to put cloud forest conservation into the hands of the next generation. That’s why we’re excited to announce MediaTrekkers Costa Rica, our signature program for high school students and educators. This summer youth filmmakers will produce a music video with local Costa Rican artists and students.
Through music, art, filmmaking and social media, youth will raise awareness about cloud forest conservation…and have a great time doing it. You see, The Digital Canopy has youth media in its soul.
Co-founder Austin Haeberle has worked with young filmmakers for more than two decades. In Guatemala, Austin trained local youth to produce a cable television show on the Rights of the Child. In New York he founded the Listen Up! Youth Media Network, a global umbrella of 150 youth media organizations worldwide. He produced national workshops for youth filmmakers and youth media practitioners, like the Ahead of the Curve workshop in 2004. In 2006 he won a George Foster Peabody Award for “Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet,” a collection of 11 short films with youth filmmakers worldwide.
On a Digital Canopy expedition, youth filmmakers and educators will be exposed to technical and storytelling techniques that have allowed The Digital Canopy founders to get youth-made films on PBS, Current TV, United Nations television and the Independent Film Channel.
